A Study Of The Appearance Of Buddhist Elements In Chinese Movies In The 21st Century

Since Buddhism was introduced into China during the Eastern Han dynasty,it has been integrated with Chinese traditional culture and gradually formed a Chinese-style Buddhist culture,which has deeply influenced China for more than 2000 years.Xi Jinping,the president of China,who gave a speech at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris in 2014,pointed out,“The Buddhist culture with Chinese characteristics has left a profound impact on Chinese people's religious beliefs,philosophical concepts,literature and art,etiquette and customs...The Chinese has developed Buddhism thoughts and formed a unique Buddhist theory based on Chinese culture.” As an important part of traditional culture,Buddhist culture has a profound influence on the field of Chinese art.However,the relevant studies are mostly concentrated in the fields of calligraphy,literature,painting,etc.,In terms of the impact on Chinese films,there is a relatively lack of systematic and in-depth research.Since the 21 st century,more and more films,with good reputation,good box office and social influence,have added various Buddhist elements and produced many works,such as A Full Bright Moon,Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back,Xuan Zang,Kang Rinpoche,and so on.There is unique cultural phenomenon that the creation of such works is becoming more and more intensive,the expression of Buddhist concepts is becoming more and more in-depth and the integration of Buddhist culture and Chinese films is becoming more and more in-depth.At present,the academic community pays less attention to this new cultural phenomenon,and there are relatively less research results with systematically summary and in-depth analysis.Therefore,focusing on this phenomenon,this paper summarizes and analyzes the expression of Buddhist elements in Chinese movies as well as analyzes its cultural value and practical significance,which has certain forward-looking and innovative.This paper takes the core idea of Buddhism culture as the starting point,through the methods of literature review and text research,summarizes,analyzes and evaluates the appearance of Buddhist cultural elements in Chinese movies,as well as explores the development path of Chinese film to achieve localized creation by absorbing Buddhist culture.In the vertical direction,the basic principles of Buddhism,such as "the ideas of mercy"," the doctrine of karmic retribution" and "the view of life and death",are taken as the main line to analyze the appearance of Buddhist culture in Chinese movies,In the horizontal direction,taking the audiovisual language of the film as the auxiliary line to analyze the influence of Buddhist elements on film creation.When considering the shaping of characters,the ideas ofmercy plays the role of characters' internal driving force to shape the image and to make the characters' image more and more full and convincing.When it comes to the theme performance,the doctrine of karmic retribution improves the ideological depth and philosophical connotation of film art.In the setting of scenes,the Buddhist death consciousness unifies the scene selection,creates the artistic conception called Nirvana,and enhances the emotion tension and aesthetic pleasing of the film.After summary and analysis,the study found that: First,the appearance of Buddhist elements in Chinese film shows the characteristics of systematic expression and in-depth expression,especially the ethical spirit of Buddhism whose depth and breadth expression in Chinese movies are constantly strengthened.Second,the presentation of Buddhist elements in the film,such as the shaping of the character image,the deepening of the theme and the setting of the plot,has a positive influence on the artistic creation of the film.The absorption of Buddhist culture and artistic expression make the Chinese film presents a unique oriental philosophical and artistic charm.Third,the integration of Buddhist culture and Chinese film plays an active role in promoting each other: on the one hand,as the Buddhist culture is visualized and spread,it has more influence and affinity;on the other hand,Chinese movie draws rich creative elements from Buddhist culture and becomes more expressive and appealing.The development of Chinese film is inseparable from the exploration,utilization and creation of traditional culture's high-quality elements.Result from this paper shows that learning and absorbing traditional Buddhist culture is the exploration path with creative potential and market potential during the localization creation and nationalization development of Chinese film.
