“Zibao jiamen” is a conventional concept and distinctive formula of traditional Chinese opera.There is scarcely any research about this concept's definition,origin,function,and significance.This paper sorts out the past definitions of “Zibao jiamen” examines the concept changes,probes its first appearance,and characterizes it more clearly using not only broad but also exclusive perspectives.With the analysis of historical materials and documents,this paper states the development of “Zibao jiamen” from the period of “pan-dramatic form” to the modern times,and summarizes the form and function of each stage.Based on the research above,this paper traces the causes and rationality of “Zibao jiamen” by analyzing the relationship between storytelling art,drama form,performance space,performance relationship,theatrical art,and its connection with the concept development.In the end,the paper connects to recent creations of Chinese Opera,discusses the appearance and usage of “Zibao jiamen” in modern days,and provides suggestions for using this concept in script writing.
