Albert Schweitzer is a scholar of great importance in Western philosophy-ethics.He explains bioethics to the world with his thoughts and actions. His thoughts are integrated into the Eastern and Western cultures, and he is regarded as the most successful ethicist who can represent the highest achievements of Western cultural and moral traditions. This thesis is devoted to exploring the process and theoretical characteristics of Schweitzer's "respect for life" ethics, excavating its positive meaning on the basis of understanding its ideological connotation, and analyzing the limitations.Firstly, the paper explains the origin of Schweitzer's "respect for life" ethics. The cultural crisis made Schweitzer realize the importance of seeking a culture that is very dynamic and suitable for the development of the times.Schweitzer's innate compassion, sense of responsibility and rich knowledge are the basis for his creation of the ethical idea of"respect for life."The two world wars and animal protection movements made him think more deeply about how people should treat other lives.Secondly, the core content of Schweitzer's "respect for life" ethics is systematically sorted out.Schweitzer knows that all life is universally connected. He advocates that all human beings should be treated equally when examining human beings and other life, because the value of life is the same from an ethical point of view.He thus extended the scope of moral care to all life within the human sphere, and advocated that human beings should fully affirm all life in the natural world and promote the survival and development of all life. Finally, the significance and limitations of Schweitzer's "respect for life" ethics are analyzed. His thought led people out of the traditional "anthropocentrism" misunderstanding and made people understand how to deal with the relationship between themselves and other life.Schweitzer's thought has some similarities with Confucian ecological ethics, which affirms the universal connection between life, expands the scope of ethical care, and advocate that people should have a heart of love,do good deeds and avoid evil. But his ideas also have some limitations,Schweitzer did not expand the scope of moral concern to such things as land, mountains and rivers. He advocated that human beings should spare no effort to care for and save other lives, which could promote the common development of human beings and other lives, but at some times would disrupt the original development process of nature. The ethical thought of "respecting life" is a major turning point in the history of environmental ethics. It not only helps the individual of life to constantly improve itself, but also promotes the progress of culture and the times.Schweitzer requires people to treasure and cherish all the lives around them on the basis of reverence for life, and to promote and complete the development of all life in nature. However, because this thought is too high for the moral quality of the subject of life,it is inevitable that there will be certain practical dilemmas in real life. Therefore, how to exert the true ethical role of his thought remains to be studied.
