In the 21th century,an 'Auditory Shift' is taking place in the field of cultural studies, while Sound has become one of the important topics of academic concern. But what is the 'Auditory Shift'?What is the status of'the study of Auditory Culture' in today's academic circles? This article takes Jonathan Sterne,a famous western scholar of aural culture,as an example to make a systematic review and study of his aural cultural thoughts, trying to find these answers from his perspective. This article will be the first master's thesis in China on the Study of Jonathan Sterne's Auditory Culture thoughts.Sterne, whose contribution covers a wide range of disciplines on cultural thoughts,is also a researcher of Auditory Culture and Sound Technology. In his influential book The Audible Past:The Cultural Origins Of Sound Reproduction, this American scholar combines the history of cultural studies and communications technology. In the light of social and cultural conditions,he describes the great changes that took place in these sound reproduction techniques during the long nineteenth century, showing not only the possibility of sound reproduction but also its influence on cultural construction, while tracing the evolution of modern sound technology to the history of the human senses. The preface mainly introduces Sterne's life experience, cultural background and current research situation at home and abroad. He has received much attention and comments from many people in the academic field, although "the study of auditory culture" is a brand-new academic field in its early stage of development.Up to now,no scholar has systematically studied the thoughts of Jonathan Sterne, who is a leading researcher of auditory culture in the West.In this sense, the topic of this paper is full of innovation and academic value. The first chapter mainly discusses the historical context of the study of auditory culture. This chapter starts from combing and analyzing the history of Western audio-visual culture,in the light of the phenomenon that human civilization attaches importance to visual perception and neglects auditory perception.First part analyzes the reasons for the rise of'Hegemony Of Visual Sense' and people's ideal of returning to the era of'Apperception',as well as the 'Auditory Shift' in the academic circle in order to reverse the current status of the study of auditory culture. The second chapter combs the theoretical framework of Sterne's auditory culture from the perspectives of 'Sound Carrier' and 'Aural Space'.Sterne's idea of auditory culture is based on the history of aural technology as the vehicle of sound, from the beginning of the sonic vibrator to the early days of the phonograph, from the Stethoscope as a scientific instrument to the Walkman as a daily tool.Sterne discusses the transformation of human subjectivity from the tracing of the history of sound technology to the analysis of the evolution of human sensory history. The third chapter mainly analyzes Sterne's thought of auditory culture.Sterne was influenced by many Western scholars, such as Don Ihde,Michel Foucault,Theodor W.Adorno.Under the influence of these scholars,Sterne analyzes the relationship between Technicality and Physicality in auditory culture from multiple perspectives. There are still some contradictions and conflicts in his works, which are analyzed together in this chapter. The conclusion summarizes the cognition and reflection of Sterne's thought of auditory culture under the modern perspective, which is influenced by the pessimism of Western culture and has a lot of anxiety in the field of aural culture research, this chapter tries to put forward some serious problems of auditory culture in the digital age while reasonably accepting the anxiety of cultural impetus.
