Teaching reading is a main factor that promotes the improvement of English ability of students at senior high schools.The improvement of reading ability and the formation of positive reading attitude is mainly based on reading instruction in class.New requirements about English reading are put forward in the new curriculum standard and it is urgent to develop students' key competencies for English.However,the traditional teaching method makes students passive in the reading process so that students lack the opportunity to think independently and learn cooperatively.Therefore,it is difficult for students to develop the learning ability and thinking quality,which hinders the improvement of their reading abilities,let alone the positive learning attitude.As such,it is necessary to carry out a research to explore to what extent that teaching reading based on the chain of questions can affect students' reading ability and learning attitude.In this study,80 senior high school students of Grade Two in a county in Shandong Province were selected as the research subjects,with 40 students in the experimental class and the other 40 in the control class.The study lasted 4 months.The author did this research through tests,questionnaires and interviews for data analysis.Before the experiment,the author distributed questionnaires to students in the experimental class to gather the relevant data about their attitudes towards English reading.In the course of the experiment,the author conducted instant and delayed tests in the experimental class to test whether this experiment has an impact on students' English reading ability.And the control class did the same.After the experiment,questionnaires about students' reading attitude and their views about the reading class and interviews were carried out in the experimental class to analyze whether students' reading attitudes have changed,together with their opinions on this experiment and teaching effects.The study finds out that the students' English reading ability improves and positive learning attitude gets formed.Specifically:(1)As for the reading comprehension scores,students in the experimental class perform better than those in the control class and the number of students who get average or higher scores increases significantly.(2)Teaching reading based on the chain of questions enables students to grasp the structure and content of the discourse,and students can understand the logical relation in a discourse,so that they can understand the discourse comprehensively.(3)Students' attitudes towards English reading get improved.85% of students are aware of the importance of reading,77.5% of students are interested in reading lessons,and 72.5% of students can participate in classroom activities more actively in reading lessons.(4)Students are positive about the experiment and 82.5% of students accept the method of reading instruction.Most of the students have made some progress and their thinking quality,expression ability and learning ability are all improved to certain extent.It needs to point out that there are some deficiencies in this research due to the limited time and research subjects.But on the whole,the research has reached the expected goals.It is hoped that the research results can provide some inspiration and reference for English reading teaching in senior high schools,and may arouse teachers and researchers to do further thinking and inquiry in this aspect.
