Lawrence Kramer's Opera Interpretation Concept Exploration

Lawrence Kramer is one of the representative figure of New Musicology.His musical hermeneutics is based on some theories,including literary/cultural criticism theory,social theory and so on.At the same time,he combined the "structural metaphor" in the text to reveal the spiritual connotation and humanistic implication that contained in the works.Focusing on Kramer's interpretation of opera,this dissertation discusses the process and content of Kramer's interpretation of opera and his narrative strategy of connecting music and culture from the perspective of his critical theories and methods of psychoanalysis,gender criticism and philosophical concepts.The first part of the article focuses on Kramer's application of psychoanalytic theory in his opera interpretation.Through an overview of psychoanalysis as a theory of criticism,this part analyzes Kramer's theory of psychoanalysis when interpreting the meaning of Salome.The method of integration reveals his narrative approach to reveal the cultural meaning of music through psychoanalysis.The second part focuses on gender criticism,and analyzes the process of Kramer's feminist criticism theory,combining culture and painting to reveal the gender relationship in the opera Salome and the cultural phenomenon behind it.The last part deals with Kramer's interpretation of opera with a preset theoretical concept as the core.In the process of analyzing his specific writings,it shows the progressive development of this theory and the construction of intricate conceptual network.In the conclusion part,the author summarizes and sums up the problem of transforming music analysis into cultural interpretation naturally in Kramer's opera narrative strategy,and at the same time thinks and evaluates his interpretation theory.Kramer's interpretation of opera has established a bridge between the interaction of music and culture.The unique innovative spirit and profound and rich humanities as well as philosophical ideas presented in the interpretation process have enlightening significance for the domestic musicology research.
