Understanding the Business of Entertainment is about entertainment law written by Gregory Bernstein who is a famous American entertainment law writer, and was published by Focal Press. It mainly tells the evolving history of Hollywood film industry, depicting operating system in large media companies,as well as the complicated legal relationships lying behind these facts. This translation project was assigned by the Entertainment Law Team from All Bright Law Firm to students from the School of Foreign Languages of East China University of Political Science and Law.The author of this dissertation is also assigned as the main translator of this book. There are two main text forms in this book, legislative text and descriptive text. Therefore,in translation, the translator should choose the most appropriate translation strategy under the two different texts, and is also required to be equipped with basic knowledge of Hollywood entertainment law and its industry operation habits. In translation, the author mainly adopts “adequacy” and “acceptability” translating principle putting forward by Gideon Toury, the founder of “translation studies” school,as the main translation strategies, and tries to use literal translation or free translation according to different stylistic features. The author believes that when dealing with different texts in legal translation, the strategies should be flexibly trimmed on the purposes of texts. If the source language is intended to express emotions, the strategy adopted in translating can be free translation. While the source language is mainly to convey information, the translation strategy adopted is often literal translation, which has limited scope. From this point of view, legal translation, such as translation of authoritative normative texts, such as laws and regulations,“adequacy” will become the translator's main choice. For texts that emphasize legal information, such as excerpts from legal papers used in this competition,“acceptability” should be taken into account. This paper is divided into four parts. The first part mainly introduces the source, background and translation process of the project. The second part mainly tells the stylistic features of the book. The third part includes the translation strategies of terms under different texts. The fourth part is the author's thoughts and conclusion.
