| "Squire" is a controversial group in modern and contemporary Chinese literary history. In different writers of different periods, the images of the squire were so different that they even showed contradictory images, which caused various disputes. This paper studies the writing of the squire in the novels of the KMT-controlled areas and tries to clarify the discourse structure of the squire writing in different periods. That is,taking the squire as the "method" and using the means of knowledge archaeology and close reading of texts, this paper discusses how the "squire",a typical subject,is generated and changed in modern literature. From the early 1930 s to the period before the total war of resistance against Japanese aggression, most of the novels concerning the squire were written in a deep and broad realistic style to describe the complicated life of turbulent China,so as to achieve an understanding of the current situation of national survival and national character. In 1937,the beginning of the war of resistance, under the control of nationalism, and in the long and uncertain years of resistance, the writing of the squire showed a certain isomorphism with political transition and literary controversy. After the end of the war of resistance against Japan, during the period of uncertainty, the writings of the squire showed a more obvious political tendency, pointing directly to different ways of community imagination. On this basis, this paper argues that squire writing provides a cultural and political perspective. The significance of its literary history lies not only in challenging the existing "power" in modern and contemporary literary history, but also in the fact that,as a practice related to politics and history, the "returning mind" and spiritual implication behind the "changing case" of squire writing provide valuable enlightenment for today’s literary creation and research. |
