On The Realization Of Women's Equal Participation In Political Power From The Perspective Of International Human Rights Law

The full participation of women in politics is not only the primary guarantee for their overall development,but also a critical approach to promote political civilization and ensure social justice.More and more global and regional declarations and human rights documents have emphasized the necessity of women's participation in national decision-making and leadership.There has been a notable increase in the representation of women in national legislatures all around the world since the “1995 Beijing Platform for Action” set the 30% target for women's political participation.A marked rise in the number of women heads of government and ministers also emerged over the past two decades.However,the biggest gap between men and women still exists in the political area which is caused by a combination of long-term social,historical and cultural factors.Women in many national parliaments are seriously under-represented and the development in this aspect is very uneven.Plus,women in the executive branch are arranged to feminine and low prestige ministers with limited space for promotion.For those countries that have implemented the gender quota system,many practical obstacles make it impossible for the gender quota itself to bring about a completely fair political competition environment.Therefore,it is necessary for all countries to take concrete measures to expand women's political participation and to confront the continuing challenges faced by women in politics.Countries should cultivate the consciousness of gender equality and female citizenship in the whole society,improve the legal and institutional support for women's participation in politics.It is still an arduous task for the cause of human rights all over the world to promote the development of women's equal political participation right.This requires consistent political action and firm will.
