Research On The Development And Prospects Of The US-South Korea Military Alliance

The military alliance between the United States and South Korea is not only an important part of the global strategy of the United States,had an important impact on the situation on the Korean Peninsula,and has played an important role in the stability of the Korean Peninsula.Because of the asymmetry of the military alliance between the United States and South Korea,the alliance has been in the alliance mode dominated by the United States and obeyed by South Korea.With the increasing comprehensive strength of South Korea,the equal relationship with the United States has been increasingly emphasized.The military alliance between the United States and South Korea has experienced four stages: "protection-protection","adjustment period","change period" and "security partnership pursuit period".South Korea's position in the alliance has been continuously improved,and its autonomy has also been strengthened.In this process,the military alliance between the United States and South Korea not only played a role in protecting South Korea's national security,but also played a dual role in regulating North Korea and the Asia-Pacific region.The United States has always regarded South Korea as the "bridgehead" of its Asia-Pacific strategy,the US military stationed in South Korea as its main military presence in Northeast Asia,and deployed weapons of mass destruction in the "THAAD" monitoring area,in order to maintain the superiority of the United States in Northeast Asia.South Korea has been following in the footsteps of the United States,taking diplomacy with the United States as the axis of South Korean diplomacy,and the military alliance between the United States and South Korea has gradually developed into an omnibearing alliance integrating economic,political,cultural and other affairs.However,there have always been contradictions within the alliance,especially after Trump took office,factors such as the contraction of the US national strategy and Trump's businessman characteristics have added a variety of challenges to the US-ROK military alliance: proposing a "high price" defense assessment fee;starting from national interests on the peninsula issue,maintaining a tough attitude;asking South Korea to join the "IndoPacific strategy" and so on,South Korea's national interests have suffered a lot of losses.At this stage,in the case of North Korea's nuclear power,South Korea still needs the protection of the United States for quite a long time.However,the changes within the alliance never stopped,South Korea pursues more "equal partner" status in the alliance.In the future,although the United States will continue to maintain the dominance of the US-ROK military alliance,South Korea will give priority to its own interests and pay more attention to the peace and development of the Korean Peninsula.
