Due to the unique geopolitical environment of the Korean Peninsula,the United States has always regarded the Korean Peninsula as an important part of its global strategy.In a certain sense,the development of relations between the United States and the North and South of the Korean Peninsula is in line with the fundamental interests of the United States itself and with the strategic interests of the United States in the region.The strategic interests of the United States are twofold.The short-term interests are to stop North Korea's nuclear weapons projects,nuclear proliferation and other threatening activities.The long-term interest is to prevent the Korean Peninsula from appearing unfavorable to the United States,and the United States will lose its foothold on the peninsula after the peninsula is unified.It is precisely because of the dual interests of the United States on the Korean Peninsula issue that the US policy toward the Korean Peninsula is launched in two directions.After President Trump entered the White House,he continued to maintain alliances with the Korean policy.The United States still assumed the political and military obligations to protect South Korea.The two sides held regular military exercises.However,the US military stationed in South Korea,the defense fees,the US-South Korea trade and even the right There are differences and contradictions between the two sides on the views of the DPRK issue.In the policy toward the DPRK,Trump gave up the policy of “Strategic Patience” of the former President Obama to be adjusted to the “Maximum Pressure and Engagement” policy.This change was triggered by the opportunity of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.The adjustment of this policy gave birth to the “Donald Trump meet with Kim Jong Un”,which has been eased the hostile and antagonistic relations between two countries in the past seventy years.The Trump administration's “Maximum Pressure and Contact” policy specifically exerts pressure on North Korea through economic sanctions,military deterrence,and verbal confrontation.This is mainly because North Korea's short-term interests have prompted the United States to make this choice;driven by long-term interests,the United States has strengthened South Korea's alliance with South Korea to sanction North Korea to maintain its dominant position in Northeast Asia.
