Saudi Arabia's Yemen policy has always been a vital and unique part of it's foreign policy.During 1962 to 2010,Saudi Arabia had successfully repressed and controlled Yemen. However, since the Upheaval in the Middle East,Saudi's Yemen policy has fallen into a dilemma — — especially the military interference towards Yemen after 2015.This thesis aims to answer the question that why Saudi's Yemen policy has failed since the Upheaval? After a review of Saudi's traditional policy towards Yemen(1962 ~ 2010),the paper focuses on Saudi's political and military interference after 2010.On this basis,we can make a general analysis to the essence and consequences of Saudi's Yemen policy as well as it's probable solution to Yemen affairs.Firstly, the paper holds that Saudi has been implementing a kind of “Backyard policy”towards Yemen.Saudi has aimed to repress and control Yemen as well as resist other country's interference in Yemen affairs.Nearly half a century since 1962,Saudi's“Backyard policy”had been generally proved successful with it's pragmatism and continuity. However, this kind of self-interest and conservative policy has became a hidden trouble for Saudi Arabia, since the “Backyard policy” weakened the ruling base of Saudi's proxies in Yemen by aggravating Yemen's Socioeconomic issues.Secondly,Saudi's interference toward Yemen after the Upheaval can be viewed as a part of its “Backyard policy”.On the one hand,Saudi's coordination plan was not only supported by the international community but also put into effect in Yemen. On the other hand,Saudi's self-interest political interference finally came to nothing because it was ineffective to settle the intractable problems such as the “Sa'dah issue”and the “Southern issue”,which made Saudi has to implement military action to retrieve the situation. Finally,Saudi's dilemma in Yemen is the consequence of the “Backyard policy”as well as the decision-making mistake of Mohammad bin Salman.Salman has inherited almost all the shortcomings of the “Backyard policy” while abandoned its advantages of relative-independence,pragmatism and clear-aim by relating his military operation with containing Iran and coordinating America's MENA policy. However, after five years bloody battle, what is certain is that the Saudi's military operation has not achieved any of the stated or unstated goals, which has been proving a fail. The paper holds that, with insuperable shortcomings of the “Backyard policy”,back to a clear-aimed,practical and flexible Yemen policy may be a rational choice for Saudi Arabia.
