Under the current Chinese education system, due to the existence of primary school enrollment deadlines, most students born in June-August are relatively young in the same grade. There are two common views among teachers and parents. One is that early school is good, relatively younger children start early and have advantages in later academic development and career choices. In terms of behavior, they will tend to plan the child's birthday in advance so that they are born before the school deadline,in case the child is delayed one year from school. The other one thinks that the older children are more mature in all aspects, easier to learn and have greater advantages in the future. In terms of behavior, they will arrange for children to enter school as late as possible in order to achieve better academic performance. Therefore, the author asks the question: Is there an academic advantage among the older children in the lower grades? How does this advantage change with grade growth? The thesis first combed the concept of relative age effects and related empirical studies. It was found that the research in competitive sports is more comprehensive and in-depth,and there are relatively few academic developments. However, the conclusions of these studies are different from domestic and foreign. The angle confirms the existence of the relative age effect.Regarding the dynamic development trend of relative age effects, some scholars have confirmed that the relative age effect has a tendency to accumulate advantages, while some scholars have reached the opposite conclusion. After combing the previous studies, the questionnaire survey and interview method were used to investigate the performance of the literary industry and corresponding demographic data of some lower-grade primary school students in Shanghai.Based on the survey results and the use of multiple regression models to process the relevant data, the results show that the relative age effect exists in the overall performance of the lower grade primary school students in the literary industry and in the three modules of "literacy, writing, reading, and expression.Secondly, based on the survey results, further analysis of the characteristics of the relative age effect, the results show that there is no difference in the relative age effect of students of different genders;students who receive less preschool education and children of low-income families are affected by relative age The relative age effect exists in the first, second and third grades of elementary school, but the second grade is the strongest and the third grade is the weakest. At the end of the article, specific suggestions are made for the phenomenon of relative age effects at the policy level, the parent level, and the school and teacher level.
