The language of mathematical symbols can represent a series of quantitative relations and the law of change.When carrying out mathematical activities,it is necessary to rely on mathematical symbols to complete relevant operations,so the importance of the language of mathematical symbols is self-evident.Therefore,the understanding of the language of mathematical symbols is particularly important during the study of mathematics.If students have difficulties in understanding the language of mathematical symbols,it will affect the subsequent learning.In order to help students to carry out the subsequent learning better,to complete the corresponding mathematical activities and tasks,it is necessary to know the level of students'current understanding on the language of mathematical symbols.Therefore,corresponding teaching strategies are developed to improve the level of students'understanding on the language of mathematical symbols.The research questions of this paper are?1?What's the level of junior high school students'understanding on the language of mathematical symbols??2?What factors lead to the differences in the level of understanding on the language of mathematical symbols among junior high school students??3?How can teachers improve the understanding on the language of mathematical symbols of junior high school students in teaching?Through three research methods which are literature research,questionnaire survey and interview,this paper studies the understanding level of junior high school students in grade 7 to 9 on the language of mathematical symbols.Through literature research,the language of mathematical symbols is divided into three dimensions:simple mathematical symbols,mathematical expressions and mathematical symbols abstracted from specific situations.According to these three dimensions,a questionnaire was prepared.Data on students'understanding on the language of mathematical symbols is obtained by means of test.Combined with interviews with teachers and students,the level of students'understanding on the language of mathematical symbols was obtained.The results show that:?1?On understanding the language of mathematical symbols,most students can achieve the level of instrumental understanding,accounting for about 60%.About one third of the students failed to achieve the level of instrumental understanding and only about 5.5%of the students can achieve the level of relational understanding.?2?Students perform best in understanding simple mathematical symbols,followed by mathematical expressions,and perform worst in understanding the mathematical symbols abstracted from specific situations.?3?The level of students'understanding on the language of mathematical symbols is influenced by the type of grade and class.The understanding level of 9th grade students is better than that of 7th grade students and 8th grade students.The understanding level of students in experimental class is better than that of students in ordinary class.?4?Students'level of understanding on the language of mathematical symbols is not affected by gender.In order to improve students'level of understanding on the language of mathematical symbols,the author puts forward the following teaching strategies based on this study:?1?Guide students to focus on the study of the language of mathematical symbols.?2?Strengthen the reading training which containing the language of mathematical symbols.?3?Pay attention to the characteristics of the language of mathematical symbols and clarify its connotation.?4?Help students form a systematic schema about the language of mathematical symbols.?5?Pay attention to the differences between students and individuals,and adopt different teaching methods.
