Mathematical word problems have rich background,which differs from other types of mathematical problems.The key to solving mathematical word problems is to formulate abstract mathematical problems from the actual situation.This paper is devoted to investigating the current situation of students' ability in the process of mathematical word problem solving by designing typical word problems,so as to provide guidance and inspiration for mathematical abstract teaching and mathematical application teaching.By combining research methods including literature review,paper-and-pencil test and statistical analysis,we illustrate the intension of mathematical word problems and mathematical abstract ability,and determine the research evaluation framework and performance indicators at different levels.We also complete the design for test paper and related investigation,and use statistical software to deal with collected data from three classes in grade one at a senior high school in Huai'an.In conclusion,we obtain the following results:(1)on the whole,the level of mathematical abstraction ability to solve word problems for senior students is not high,and the expected percentage of each level is relatively low.61.9% of students reach level 1,45.3% of students reach level 2,and13.5% of students reach level 3.(2)from the perspective of gender,there is no significant difference at all levels between boy students and girl students;(3)from the perspective of class nature,according to the A?B?C three classes divided from high to low grades,there are significant differences at different levels among different classes,in particular,there are significant differences among C and other classes at level 1,and also A with other classes at level 2.At last,the author sums up the problems of the students in the process of solving word problems as follows: the translation of mathematical language is difficult,the understanding of mathematical concepts is not clear,and the methods of mathematical thinking are not proficient.In senior high school,the author puts forward some teaching suggestions on how to cultivate students' mathematics abstract ability from three aspects: mathematics reading teaching,concept "regeneration" teaching and mathematical modeling activities.
