High school students experience negative emotions due to dissonance between reality and expectation in academics, interpersonal relationships and other life events. The accumulating negative emotions that cannot be reasonably dealt with will become negative moods, which in turn hinder the development of a healthy personality.High school students of fine arts are sensitive, emotionally sumptuous and highly subjective. They are unique while sharing common psychological characteristics with other high school students.Existing studies on negative emotions among high school students do not include those in fine arts specifically. The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of negative emotions experienced by high school students in fine arts and to explore the effect of painting therapy as a form of intervention. The study consists of two experiments.Experiment 1 used the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule(PANAS)and the Egma Minnen av Bardndosnauppforstran(EMBU)to compile a collective report of 75 students to examine the relationships between characteristics of negative emotions and their parenting styles experienced.Then,24 students with high negative emotion scores were selected and assigned to the experimental group and the control group for experiment 2.In the second experiment, the experimental group was treated for 8 weeks, once a week utilizing group painting therapy as a form of intervention to improve negative emotions. The control group did not receive any intervention. After the experiment, the experimental group and the control group were tested with the PANAS questionnaire. The effect of intervention was evaluated by comparing the discrepancies between the two groups of participants. The main findings are as follows:(1)The emotional state of high school students of fine arts has generally developed well.(2)There was a significant difference in scores of negative emotions between those with siblings and those without(p<0.05).The only child in their respective families scored significantly higher than those with siblings.(3)There was a significant positive correlation between father's punishment/strictness and negative emotions.Father's rejection/denial also showed significant positive correlation with the child's negative emotions.(4)The mother's excessive interference/protectiveness and the mother's rejection/denial both have significant positive correlations with negative emotions of the students. The mother's emotional warmth/understanding has a significant negative correlation with negative emotions of the students.(5)Results of intervention for the 12 students of fine arts who scored highly on negative emotions illustrated that painting therapy has a significant effect on improving negative emotions. It is worth popularizing in application to aid in education provided by institutions in similar categories.
