Research On Doreen Massey's Theory Of Production Of Space And Its Significance

Since the 1970 s,under the impetus of the new technological revolution,the spatial barriers to the global flow of capital have been eliminated.The "space transfer" has replaced the "time compression" as the main way of capital accumulation,and the space has been revitalized with the production of space published in the 1974 years as the main symbol.Contemporary social theory opens up a spatial turn.Space is no longer used as a rigid container,but become an important part of production relations and productivity as the means of production to participate in the production process,at the same time in the production process to complete their own reproduction,shaping new social relations and spatial form.Production of space is not only the process of reshaping geographical form,but also the process of economic production,political reconstruction,social transformation,class and gender relations reproduction,which leads to many problems such as the space deprivation of capital,the two yuan antagonism between urban and rural areas,class and gender antagonism,and so on.Some scholars of Western Marxism turn to the study of the process and mechanism of capitalist space production,and "space production" has become a new vision of the criticism of contemporary western Marxist political economy.Doreen Massey is a famous left-wing geologist in Britain,but also a Marxist feminist,highly concerned about the unjust problems in capitalist space production,different from the perspective of the problems of space production in the people of the listing of Lefebvre,Harvey,Castells and so on,Massey takes the spatial structure as the clue,from "Geography" and " The study of capitalist production from the perspective of gender ".She focused on the spatial organization of capitalist production relations to explain the differences in geographical types in employment,regional development imbalance and other issues,opened up a new path of space production theory research.In Massey's view,space production refers to the production of space itself,where the space is not a space in the sense of geography,but a social space,full of various power relations.Space production is unjust production,manifested as the unbalanced development of space,and space justice is its ultimate value appeal.The injustice of space production is the result of the combination of economic,political and social factors,which is manifested in capital,power and gender,and the nature of capital profit determines the dominant position of capital in space production,while capital accumulation must be based on the exploitation of the other party,which contains the nature of injustice.And the power in the initial distribution pattern presents a kind of "topological structure",space is the product of the social relations full of power,the unbalanced distribution of power directly leads to the dominance and affiliation between regions;gender,as a relationship between people,hides differences at the beginning,and gender relations are socially constructed.The root cause of gender inequality lies in capitalist production under the patriarchal system of male supremacy.Massey's analysis of gender relations,especially the current situation of women's production and life in capitalist production,to a certain extent makes up for the lack of gender perspective in previous space production related research,on the other hand,it is conducive to promoting the awakening of female consciousness and promoting the construction of harmonious and equal gender relations.This paper attempts to study Doreen Massey's theory of production of space systematically,paying particular attention to how she takes the spatial division of labor as a clue to make a profound analysis of the space production of capitalism,on the basis of which,from the operational logic of capital,power and gender to expose the unjust nature of space production,At the same time,the gender relations in space production are criticized.This research perspective and academic efforts are aimed at highlighting another important direction,path and characteristics of the criticism of contemporary western Marxist political economy.On the basis of combing the theory of Massey space production,this paper also tries to combine theory with practice,analyze the unjust problems and phenomena in real space production,and discuss the construction path of actionable universal(space)justice from the process of space production,which provides some reference significance for the development of urbanization in China.
