The Competitive Intensity Within Alliance,innovation Types And Alliance Governance

With the development of China Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance,many enterprises are paying more attention to the alliance-based open innovation.As a kind of inter-organizational relationship,strategic alliance often involves the conflict between individual interests and collective interests,so it has the ambidexterity of competition and cooperation,which is called coopetition.The existing theory holds that competing partners are an important source of innovation,organizational learning,complementary capabilities and key resources.However,the existing empirical studies show inconsistent conclusions about the impact of the co-opetitive alliance on firm innovation.Some studies suggest that co-opetitive alliance promotes innovation,while other studies suggest that co-opetitive alliance impedes innovation.So how does the co-opetitive alliance affect innovation and how should enterprises leverage different types of alliance governance to direct the effects to the positive way? Based on a comprehensive review of the literature,this paper summarizes and integrates the framework of the existing theories on coopetition,firm innovation and alliance governance,proposes an empirical model of co-opetitive alliance impact enterprise innovation.This study points out that competitive intensity within alliance is the core that differentiates co-opetitive alliance and other alliances.We conducted indepth survey on 123 Chinese manufacturing enterprises.By using OLS regression analysis,this paper empirically tests the theoretical models of innovation and governance of the co-opetitive alliance.The study finds that the intensity of competition with co-opetitive alliance has a negative impact on exploratory innovation and a positive impact on exploitative innovation.Contractual governance will strengthen the negative impact of co-opetitive alliance on exploratory innovation.
