An Empirical Study On Influencing Factors Of Emerging Countries Participating In Global Value Chains

From the perspective of economies of scale,this paper empirically analyses the internal factors that affect emerging countries' participation in the global value chains(GVCs).Based on the domestic value added(DVA)in exports from UNCTAD-Eora GVC Database,eight representative emerging countries such as Argentina,Brazil,China and India are selected as the research objects.The theoretical and empirical analysis show that the basic characteristics of emerging countries participating in the GVCs are significantly affected by economies of scale.The internal and external economies of scale as well as dynamic learning effect are derived from the total scale economies effect,which mainly promote the position of emerging countries in the GVCs.The regression results show that economies of scale is a key factor influencing the emerging countries' participation in GVCs.Scale economies effect has a significant positive impact on DVA of emerging countries.Moreover,there exists a threshold effect when analyze the impact of economies of scale on DVA.The economics of scale with different levels influences DVA differently.Also,the threshold effect is more significant in overall and industrial sectors,but relatively weak in service sectors.On this basis,the paper proposes policy proposals for emerging countries to improve the status in the GVCs.Emerging countries should define the competitive position in the future GVCs.For exerting the effect of economies of scale,emerging countries had better invest more in research and development so as to enhance innovation ability.Optimizing industrial structure and absorbing foreign capital into emerging industries also help cultivate new comparative advantage.What's more,emerging countries need to strengthen the cooperation with other emerging countries.Thus emerging countries can use economies of scale more effectively to further enhance their competitive power in the GVCs.
