Small and medium-sized enterprises(SME)have a major role in the economy worldwide, and particularly in Spain. However, most of the studies regarding human resources focus on large corporations, leaving aside small businesses. To try to fill that gap,we analyzed how companies with fewer resources can compete with larger ones to attract and retain top talented employees. The following document studies the Human Resources strategy of Construcciones TyR,an SME located in Galicia,a mainly rural region in the northwest of Spain. The performance of the company is being negatively affected by a high rotation of office employees and the difficulties to attract new talent.More than half of the office employees left the company within 18 months, and there is not a human resources department nor a clear strategy in this area. This paper is a thorough analysis of the research background and current status of the construction industry, the internal and external environment of the firm, together with the proposal of an implementation plan that is recommended to be executed by the company. The thesis used both primary and secondary sources, including published books and online materials,as well as an empirical study in the form of a survey. The purpose of it was to get a better understanding of what the employees care about when choosing a job position, and if there is any distinctive feature regarding SME.SME may have fewer resources, but they have other characteristics that can leverage to retain and attract new employees. However, they need to adapt to the new circumstances instead of keeping operating the same way it worked well for them a long time ago. They must take advantage of the resources and possibilities that the environment provides them,as well as set a human resources strategy and align it with their corporate values and objectives. The findings of the thesis indicate that the salary is not the main factor when choosing a job,and its relative importance is even lower in workers of SME: factors like to have a good working environment,a work-life balance or career projection have a larger weight on that decision. This demonstrates the importance of human resources management in small and medium-sized enterprises, showing that even with a small investment they can carry out many measures that improve their performances. This study reveals several novelties regarding human resources management that can be applied in SME,but there is still room for more research in this field.
