DuLiu town was a famous industrial and commercial town in North China during the late Qing Dynasty and Republic of China.It was named by the gathering of three rivers.The industrial and commercial development of DuLiu town was closely related to its convenient transportation.And the development and change of transportation played an important role in the formation and development of DuLiutown.In the late Qing dynasty,the development of the town mainly depended on the three rivers.In the period of the Republic of China,the appearance of modem newmodes transportation,such as railway and highway,improved the local transportationsystem and had an influence on its future development.The mainstream media TaKungPao,Shen Daily and Social Welfare Tientsin in this period paid much attentionto the development and problems of traffic in DuLiu area.These reports provided valuable information for studying the modem times development of DuLiu town.This paper summarizes the gradual process of how DuLiu Town transformed from a military garrison in the Northern Song Dynasty to an industrial and commercial market town in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China era.Secondly,it gathers information about rivers,disasters and commercial development that are closely associated with transportation development.In the modem times,the transportation conditions of North China were greatly improved due to the massive constructions of railways and roads,alongside the emergence of steamships,trains,automobiles,and other transportation tools,which contributed to the improvement of transportations in DuLiu Town as well.Steamers,railway stations,and roads represented the transportation changes since the modern times,exerting a significant impact on the development of township.Regarding the reports of DuLiu Town found in the newspapers and periodicals in the modern times,this paper touches upon the changes brought by new transportation tools to township development by focusing oncommercial coverage,response to natural disasters,transportation,and management,as well as transportation and travel,etc.After the development of new traffic,the resistance to natural disasters has beenstrengthened to ensure the stable development of business.But on the interior space,station and the alienation of the original town commercial center,on the outer space,the new railway line similar to the original river transport lines,failed to expand new markets for its,and although traffic management mode with the town development,management ability is always less.It is for these reasons the DuLiu town failed to develop further due to the new traffic.
