The Study On The Features Of Digital Abbreviations In Official Documents

Chinese abbreviations are a very fruitful topic in contemporary Chinese vocabulary research.Numeric abbreviations in official documents,as a language phenomenon,has evolved significantly in recent years.However,there are only a few monographs or papers that focus on the research of numerical abbreviations in official documents,or combine official documents with numeral abbreviations.On the basis of previous researches,40 government reports of the China State Council in 1978-2018,18 reports of the Guangdong Government and a total of 18 reports of Guangzhou Government in 2000-2018 were taken as the article's main corpora to study the numeral abbreviations in Chinese official documents.Besides,the article also took some typical numeral abbreviation from Guangdong Provincial Government official documents in 1999-2019 as a supplement of the corpora.The applied theories of this article including but not limited to cognitive theory,modern rhetoric,acceptance psychology,grammatology and other related theories.In order to have a fully picture of the numeral abbreviations in Chinese official documents,the author choose exemplification,concept induction,chart analysis and statistical approaches as research methods to analyze the corpora.Specific contents were as below.Firstly,from the synchronic level,the article has systematically discussed the judging criteria of numeral abbreviations,concentrated on three primitive abbreviated types in contemporary Chinese official documents,such as Chinese characters numeral abbreviation,Arabic abbreviations and ‘Arithmetic abbreviations',then deepen studied their three main functions: syntax,semantics and pragmatics.Aiming at the new changes of numeral abbreviations,a targeted judgment method was proposed.Secondly,from the diachronic level,the article pointed out the four major trends of numeral abbreviations in Chinese official documents during the past four decades: the stability of abbreviated habits,the increasing frequency of abbreviation,the diversity of abbreviations and the innovation of abbreviated forms.Using chart analysis,statistics,and tables and diagrams to visually present the use of numerical abbreviations in official documents has lasting vitality.Ultimately,in order to provide a reference,which the article mainly aimed,for the use of numeral abbreviations in Chinese official documents,the article draws a conclusion of its superiorities and limits.The superiorities could be known as: the highly generalization of original meaning,the convenience of expression and the diversity of combinations.This makes the numerical abbreviations not only convenient and flexible to use,but also the simplicity and solemn conciseness of the pursuit of official style.Instead,the limits of numeral abbreviations in Chinese official documents were: the indirectness of the original meanings,the non-uniqueness of abbreviations,the possible ambiguity due to the abbreviated forms and the urgency of setting its using specification.
