Electrostatic spraying (ESS) has found applications in many areas, including agriculture, ink-jet printing, thin film coating, nanotechnology, etc. Flow-limited field-injection electrostatic spraying (FFESS) is an advanced and unique ESS technology because it has many advantages over the conventional electrostatic spraying (CESS). FFESS is not only able to generate more stable and reproducible spraying at lower voltages, but also to spray insulating liquids. What is more, FFESS can generate stable and controllable multi jet spraying, which leads to many new applications. This thesis will summarize work on FFESS in both theoretical modeling and application. A theoretical model of the multi-jet FFESS process will be formulated, and a comprehensive model of Coulomb fission proposed. The I-V characteristics of FFESS are measured and analyzed. Some related investigations will be introduced that address accurate resistivity measurement for single nanowires and thin films and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Some engineering applications of FFESS and possible future work will be briefly discussed.
