Abstract/Summary:
In this study, traffic data were collected and analyzed for 12 work zone sites in Texas highway. Updated work zone capacity under different area type and work zone configuration was summarized. The results indicate that area type and configuration do not have significant impacts on the work zone capacity. Field data were then compared to the results from QUEWZ-92, HCS+, MicroBencost and Kim's Regression Model. HCS+ is more likely to overestimate the work zone capacity, while Kim's model and MicroBenCost are more likely to underestimate it. QUEWZ-92 is likely to overestimate the work zone capacity in rural area, while for the one in urban area, it is likely to underestimate it. Four work zone sites are modeled in the VISSIM based on the real-world data to calculate vehicle delay cost and vehicle emission associated with work zone. Regarding the vehicle delay cost, Jiang's model is performing much better than QUEZE-92.
