Abstract/Summary:
Emerging from late capitalist society is a city state more concerned with the value (commodity) rather than the public, social character of the city. In response to this concern, this thesis attempts to produce an alternative image of the city, one which emphasizes the public aspect of everyday life.;The program of a cemetery is developed as an analogue to the city. City archetypes, symbol and myth are absorbed into the model. The importance of the city is derived from its experience, and it is hoped that the interpretation of these symbols and myths will lead to new tradition and permanence within the social collective of the city.;Three proposals are created that return the model, as hypothetical designs, back into the city as a modified form of itself. The value returned to the city is an experience that is embedded in the memory of its inhabitants.
