Abstract/Summary:
Urbanization is transforming rural forested areas affecting the potential to implement sustained yield management (SYM), especially, on nonindustrial private forestland (NIPF) in the Northeastern United States. Resource managers and planners are concerned with the effects urbanization may have on the SYM of NIPF. This study performed spatial analyses through a geographic information system to explore specific variables influencing the SYM of forestland in central New York (CNY). In addition, I used spatial analyses to produce a NIPF parcel distribution of one county in CNY. The study also attempted to integrate forest stand characteristics with specific spatial variables to predict the probability of SYM on individual properties. Resource managers, land planners, and policy makers are collectively struggling to understand the implications connected to urbanization with regard to forestland values. This study contributes to the ongoing quest of explaining the challenges presented to the forestry community by the urbanizing forested landscape.; Keywords. urbanization, sustained yield management, nonindustrial private forestland, geographic information systems, land-use planning...
