Abstract/Summary:
The NACCCE Report (1999) states, "No education system can be world-class without valuing and integrating creativity in the curriculum" (16). Most educational research in the area of creativity has largely focused on correlates of creativity such as person, process, product, and press (Amabile, 1996; Fishkin, et al., 1999; Starko 2001; Nelson and Rawlings, 2007). This phenomenological study seeks to include the perspective of students in the experience of creativity. Since context is essential to the creative process (Amabile, 1996; Csikszentmihalyi, 1996; Elliott, 1995; Omaggio, 1986; Lyster, 2007), careful planning led to an integrated unit of study. For the purpose of this research the unit of study explored language and culture in the music classroom, and music and culture in the second language classroom for the reciprocal benefits of each subject (Blacking, 1995; Omaggio, 1986; Policar, 2008). Finally the findings are discussed in light of the emerging themes, practical applications and implications for future educational practices.
