Abstract/Summary:
Using data from the 1996 wave National Longitudinal Study of Youth, a logit model is estimated to evaluate the effect that gender has on occupational attainment conditional on stated occupational preference. Using explanatory variables that represent a worker's ability and productivity, I find no evidence of gender hiring bias using data pooled across occupational categories. However, there is evidence of employer hiring bias against females in the Managers and Administrators category and in the Crafts occupational category. On the other hand, in the Social Science category and Sales and Clerical occupational category, there is evidence of employer hiring bias that leans towards hiring females. There is no gender difference in the attainment of desired occupation found in the categories of the Hard Sciences, Operatives, and the Labor and Services.
