Spanish-language and bilingual newspapers in the United States need to increase their readership among Hispanics in order to thrive in the industry. Little research has been done on how to do this, so this thesis studies the type of content and design elements that will attract Hispanic-American readers. This author conducted in-depth interviews with design experts throughout the United States, as well as with editors and publishers of successful Spanish-language and bilingual newspapers. This author found that although Hispanic readers have similar interests as non-Hispanic readers, they are significantly interested in stories about people in their communities. They are drawn to bright colors, large photographs and bold headlines. |
