Abstract/Summary:
In an effort to further explore social knowledge regarding flirting in the workplace, this study uses critical discourse analysis on discourse generated from 32 in-depth interviews to obtain information on the prevalent themes of organizational flirting. This study employs convenient and strategic sampling to understand the workplace lives of a diverse variety of employed individuals and their persuasive acts in the workplace, particularly examining the acts through the frames of flirting motivations and sexual harassment. From these narratives, four communicative cues of flirting are noted; shared similarities and differences of men's and women's perceptions of flirting cues, especially in regard to the flirting motivations; and behaviors that are disjunctively constructed as sexual harassment are established.
