Abstract/Summary:
This analysis utilizes the methodology of value analysis to examine recent anti-drug public service announcements. This study demonstrates the importance of considering public service announcements as rhetorical artifacts by providing relevant history, significance, research, and implications. Additionally, several rhetorically significant core values are identified during the course of the analysis and classified accordingly. These core values are representative of the time and culture(s) that produced the public service announcements.;This work concludes that the individual core values identified, when considered together, form a value system. The value system that emerged through the examination of these announcements is the American Value System. Reading the messages present in these announcements for the values present provides essential insights into contemporary social climate and allowed for a valuable discussion on the relationship between the media, values, and culture.
