Abstract/Summary:
This study examined Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce (HFHGB) strategies for maximizing volunteer experiences during project builds. The opportunity was to help ensure that HFHGB continues to be a successful locally governed affiliate achieved by the dedication of its volunteers. The study included a literature review that focused on management in non-profit organizations, capacity development, and organizational change. This action research project utilized interviews to answer the question: How can HFHGB maximize volunteer experiences during project builds? The outcome of this project was a list of the following six recommendations for HFHGB: (a) select an operational board structure model, (b) hold more town hall meetings with a more relaxed atmosphere, (c) develop a strategy to increase the number of volunteers, (d) develop a policy and procedure on volunteer acknowledgement, (e) expand their available support and education for the volunteers, and (f) conduct periodic informal "check-ins" to assess volunteer experiences.
