Abstract/Summary:
The thesis discusses Britain's modernization in light of: (i) the scientific revolution resting on a novel epistemology, the empirical method, and the response it aroused from epistemologies derived from human purposes rather than natural processes; (ii) the tension between human structures and human agency in the process of modernization; and (iii) the material forces of production: the expansion of markets through trade and the progress of technology from agriculture to industry.
