Abstract/Summary:
The concept of terrorism is almost as old as humankind. However, globalization has lead to the evolution of a new phenomenon, that of international terrorism. There is no doubt that the September 11th attacks on the United States were "crimes against humanity," however, the subsequent "War on Terror" has also imposed restrictions upon many of our basic human rights. This paper ascertains that these impositions are a direct result of state behavior in response to terrorism, which can be explained by Realist theory. The paper begins with a discussion on the emphasis placed on human rights in the post-Cold War era, during which the issue of human rights moved from the sidelines to the center of international politics. Next the status of human rights in international affairs and national policy making since the 9-11 attacks and the subsequent War on Terror will be explored. Current policy making in the United States and the United Kingdom, which has centered around the War on Terror, has had a drastic impact on human rights. Finally this paper seeks to assess the steps needed in order to ensure future reconciliation of human rights and national security.
