Abstract/Summary:
Due to IDEA 2004, increased interest has been placed on conducting functional behavior assessments (FBA). However, there is a lack of research conducted in school settings. This study will help expand the research base of FBAs within the school, as well as demonstrate how FBAs evaluate possible controlling variables in classroom environments. In this study a functional behavior assessment was conducted on a fourth grader who displayed problem behavior. The interventionist designed and implemented and FBA with the intent of developing a data based behavior intervention plan. The functional behavior assessment was able to identify environmental variables that became evident in the presence of disruptive behavior and therefore assist the researcher in developing an intervention specifically for this student. After the completion of the treatment, it was apparent that the FBA did determine the variables that needed to be modified in order for the student to more easily participate in class activities and better benefit from academic instruction.
