Abstract/Summary:
Scuba diving is a popular recreational activity practiced all over the world in fresh and salt water bodies, but it can have damaging impacts on delicate aquatic environments. Unfortunately, many scuba divers lack knowledge of the marine ecosystem and environmentally responsible behaviors, which contributes to the ecological degradation of the environment. This paper examines the current educational materials available to new and experienced scuba divers through various outlets, and identifies gaps in important environmental training. Raising awareness through education and marketing, scuba divers could be inspired to learn and practice sustainable scuba diving. If divers know how their actions impact the environment, and are motivated to change destructive behaviors, we can effectively mitigate direct and indirect damage to the environment so scuba can be enjoyed by future generations.
