Abstract/Summary:
Sustainable forest management in Canada is driven by a complex array of forces. Government legislation and certification standards, two such forces present the industry with a complex assortment of both government and certification requirements. Recent speculation of discrepancies between perception and reality concerning forest sustainability, government legislation, and certification have highlighted research inadequacies on the issue of sustainable forest management requirements. This study facilitates an understanding of the relationship between legislation and certification standards. Through the use of a comprehensive set of forest management indicators, the study uncovered relative stringencies of legislative and certification requirements. Further outcomes of the study outline the challenges associated with executing this comparative analysis. Amalgamating information pertaining to the results and struggles present a deeper look into sustainable forest management and the relationship between government legislation and certification standards.
