Abstract/Summary:
Learning in crisis is not an extensively documented phenomenon. This project adds to what is known by confirming that learning occurs in crisis and acknowledging the opportunity to facilitate this learning. Utilizing Action Research methodologies and engaging Registered Nurses (RNs) working in the Emergency Department (ED) at Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH), an appreciation for the strategies that facilitate learning in crisis was gained. The research results revealed that personal responsibility and self-motivation, the need to feel safe, relationships with trusted colleagues, immediate learning support, relevance, meeting basic needs, and crisis itself facilitate learning that occurs in crisis.;The significance of this research is that it improves understanding, provides tools, and builds procedures that can assist RNs working in crisis. It is also an opportunity to facilitate acumen and improve decision making in conditions where chaos seemingly prevails.
