Abstract/Summary:
Universities are attempting to enhance the quality of their academic and research endeavors as competition increases for students, faculty, and funding. To further its mission of providing excellence in education, research, and outreach, the University of Delaware (UD) has developed centers and institutes devoted to providing leadership in various fields of study. Because of its strategic location among numerous public gardens, UD is interested in establishing an interdisciplinary Center in Public Horticulture.; The purpose of this study was to create an initial plan outlining the prospects of such a Center. To formulate this plan, the researcher conducted an internal assessment of the Plant and Soil Sciences Department at UD, an external assessment of the field of public horticulture, and an analysis of existing centers and institutes at UD. This exploratory qualitative study utilized surveys, interviews, and focus groups with selected internal and external stakeholders from academia, the green industry, government, and public horticultural institutions.; The study defines public horticulture, identifies the Center's potential education, research, and outreach activities; lists and explores potential internal and external collaborations; identifies important internal and external environmental factors; considers the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges associated with the Center's establishment; proposes a mission statement; characterizes existing centers at UD; and explores two exemplary UD centers.; With further planning, adequate resources, and constructive partnerships, a Center in Public Horticulture could prove to be an effective means to further the field of public horticulture while enhancing UD's mission of excellence in education, research, and outreach.
