Abstract/Summary:
Hollywood actress and best-selling author Carrie Fisher once wrote, "If my life weren't funny, it would just be true, and that's unacceptable." This collection of creative non-fiction essays, titled A One Percent Margin of Error, embraces the humor found in almost every situation that I have come across and chosen to write about. This humor needs to live inside me when I write, as it eventually manifests itself as humility, honesty, and even a touch of self-deprecation, and the acknowledgement that I don't always have the right answer, or sometimes, even an answer at all.; One of my favorite plays is Michael Frayn's Copenhagen, which is about war, physics, and Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Rather than being scientific and alienating, it is thoroughly engaging because of the very palpable human element. Hopefully, my thesis is similar, embracing the humor in our foibles, and celebrating the uncertainty at the heart of things.
