Project schedule review: Delay causes and mitigation strategies for hospital renovation projects

Both the current and forecast expansion of capital projects in the healthcare industry in Canada are significant. Delivering projects on time in a health care setting is critical to the ongoing operational aspects of a hospital. This thesis is a comprehensive and objective review of project schedule delays in health care facility renovation projects. The study identifies the list of project schedule delay causal factors, and their corresponding frequency and magnitude for a sample population of a project typical in an acute care facility. Distinct patterns were revealed. Solution strategies to reduce or eliminate the causal factors were also generated. In addition, a review of project schedule overrun was completed. A key result of the study is the identification of the causes of project schedule delays and corresponding strategies to reduce their occurrence.
