Abstract/Summary:
Simulink and dSPACE software packages make real-time implementation of controllers on real time devices like motors easy The performance and optimal operation of devices can be easily studied and evaluated. This thesis focuses on the design and implementation of digital PI controllers (current and speed PI controllers) for cascade control of a dc motor. By determining the motor characteristic parameters (steady state and dynamic parameters), the simulink model of the actual 42V, 2-pole lab kit dc motor is developed. Simulation is performed on the simulink model of the do motor for cascade control using the controllers designed based on the machine parameters by giving a step input. Using dSPACE software and a DS1104 control board; the simulink model of the dc motor is replaced with the actual motor for the real-time implementation. The PI controller parameters for both speed and current controllers are tuned for good response in terms of transient and steady state characteristics for a step input. The simulation results and real time results are compared. The ultimate goal is to control the real-time dc motor using the controllers designed and it is accomplished using the dSPACE software tools.
