Abstract/Summary:
How can one create a series of spaces in the public realm of circulation and gathering that responds to the specificity of the Northern Canadian city?; My chosen area of study is the creation of a network of public spaces that expand and contract in response to the adaptive behaviors of a society which experiences extreme seasonal conditions. This is an architecture developed in response to climate and community.; I endeavored to study this through the analysis of existing patterns of behavior, appropriation of spaces, and social climactic responses in the downtown of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. My approach was to develop a one-block infill on the main street (Franklin Avenue), concentrating on the qualities of public space that could be carved out of this block to enhance and celebrate the lifestyle of the Northerner.
