Chemical composition and bioactivity of essential oils of seventeen aromatic plants from Ibadan, Nigeria

Abstract/Summary:
Essential oils are becoming promising sources of natural medicinal products due to their bioactive components. The focus of this research is to increase the information and knowledge of essential oils due to the low percentage of natural product research. In this work, the chemical composition and antimicrobial activities of the essential oils from the leaves, flowers, bark, and root of Alchornea cordifolia, Borreria verticillata, Canthium subcordatum, Cassia alata, Cassia hirsuta, Cassia occidentalis, Datura metel, Ficus exasperata, Gnetum africanum, Gongronema latifolium, Lawsonia inermis, Peristrophe bicalyculata, Pyrenacantha staudtii, Solanum erianthum, Tetrapleura tetraptera, Tithonia diversifolia, and Vocanga africana from Ibadan, Nigeria were evaluated. Chemical composition of the oils revealed the presence of monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, aromatics, fatty acids, and a diterpene. Among the antimicrobial results, the fruit oil of Cassia alata exhibited the strongest activity with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 19.5 ppm against Staphylococcus aureus.
