Abstract/Summary:
Six female subjects with persistent reflux symptoms participated in the present study. Five of the six subjects had been taking prescriptive reflux medication for a minimum of three months, but with little or no symptom relief. During a pre-interview, subjects filled out a pre-questionnaire and were given a pamphlet. Each subject followed a diet and lifestyle modification regimen for 30 days. During the post-interview, subjects filled out a post-questionnaire. The results from the pre- and post-questionnaire were compared. Although, no statistically significant differences were found among the subjects, there were noticeable decreases in the severity of symptoms reported from 4 of the 6 subjects. Two of the six subjects reported a decrease in the number of symptoms and reflux episodes. Managing Gastroesophageal and Laryngopharyngeal reflux with medication alone may not resolve symptoms adequately. Including diet and lifestyle modifications may decrease the amount and severity of reflux symptoms.
