Abstract/Summary:
The play, GODS AND GODDESS, is based on an incident in the life of John Steinbeck. The lives, times and place of the characters involved were researched.;In addition to "Sources Consulted," research was conducted at The Center for Steinbeck Studies, San Jose State University, the John Steinbeck Collections, Department of Special Collections, Green Library, Stanford University; and the National Steinbeck Center in Steinbeck's hometown, Salinas.;In-depth tour was made of San Jose, the Salinas Valley, and the Monterey Peninsula of California. Particular attention was paid to the Pacific Grove cottage in which Steinbeck and his first wife, Carol, lived during the early years of marriage and career. This cottage is the setting of the play.;The prologue, five acts, and epilogue are set in a 24-hour period. The relationships of the Steinbecks and Ed Ricketts have been affected by the recent arrival of Joseph Campbell.
