Abstract/Summary:
The Functional Unity of the Singing Voice by Babara M. Doscher (Lanham, Md.: Scarecrow Press, 1994) is often used as a required text in Voice Pedagogy courses in the United States. This document is a translation of a portion of the text book into Korean, with permission by Scarecrow Press. The selected sections were chosen because they address vocal misuse and abuse and provide practical information about vocal health and hygiene. The information is both valuable and important for young Korean singers who often are unaware of this specific knowledge.;Chapter I is a translation of Chapter 9 of Doscher's book. This chapter presents how vital the functional unity of the singing mechanism is in order to achieve a balanced healthy voice production. Chapter II is a translation of Appendix one, which contains information on the misuse, and overuse of the voice, including various physical and functional disorders and their characteristics and causes. Suggestions for singers on how to avoid these problems are included. Chapter III is a translation of Appendix two. This chapter deals with issues concerning vocal health and hygiene. Practical advice on how to maintain a healthy voice is provided. Also included in this document is Appendix A which contains a glossary of both musical and non-musical terms and Appendix B which includes anatomical illustrations of the larynx and vocal tract.
