Abstract/Summary:
This was a longitudinal study to compare speech and language development in a group of children with developmental verbal dyspraxia (DVD) to that of a group of children with severe phonological disorder (SPD). Familial history of speech and language disorders was also examined.; The records of 14 individuals, seven DVD and seven SPD, were analyzed. Independent groups t-tests were completed. Results indicated no statistically significant difference between groups regarding age at initial evaluation and elapsed time. A two-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated a statistically significant increase in speech production inventories over time for both groups. However, no statistically significant difference regarding consonant inventories or receptive and expressive language was found between groups. Incidence of familial history was similar for both groups. Therefore, this study does not support differences in total consonant inventories, language scores or family history between children with DVD and SPD ranging from 29 to 108 months.
