Abstract/Summary:
Through this project, I have explored the significance of the technique of combining fairy tales and fantasy into a single form as exemplified in Deerskin by Robin McKinley and Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier. The thesis opens by giving background on both authors and defining fairy tales and fantasy. The first chapter explores the significance of combining the two forms and the literary techniques employed. The second chapter explores the motifs of rape and redemption and how this form makes a statement thereon for modern readers. I conclude with an exploration of the authors' success. The fantasy fairy tale offers a happy ending and shows how the reader can achieve such an ending for herself. This form also offers the reader a therapeutic closeness to events in the story while at the same time, offering the safe distance of the fantasy form.
