Miyazawa Kenji is a household fairy tale writer in Japan. Although he only published a fairy tale set during his lifetime, after the death he has become so famous that his fairy tales have been studied by some researchers.This paper Discuss the fantasy and reality of Miyazawa Kenji's fairy tales from the Mahayana Buddhist thought and Fantasy literature theory of modern Western to find those internal relations. First of all, Fantasy literature theory of modern west emphasizes J·R·R·Tolkien's "the second world theory". The real world and the fantasy world of Miyazawa Kenji's fairy tales confirmed this theory; the pattern of the fairy tale is the classic type of western fantasy literature. Elves is one of he representative image of modern fantasy literature, and the characters of debut in Miyazawa Kenji's fantasy fairy tales are mostly natural spirit, which is a branch of the image of the elves. Fantasy literature theory of modern west is the junction between the fantasy and reality of Miyazawa Kenji's fairy tales. Second, the mercy of the Mahayana Buddhism illustrates that Buddhas, Bodhisattvas deeply concern and respect life and all beings are equal. In Miyazawa Kenji's fantasy and reality fairy tales, he gives the spirit of compassionate care both for the good life and the guilty life, which reflects his view of respecting life. The mercy in Mahayana Buddhism is the other junction between the fantasy and reality of Miyazawa Kenji's fairy tales.
